Alan K. Lathrop - Class of 1961

Book Cover photo of A Surgeon with StilwellPhoto of Alan K LathropAlan spent over 30 years working as the Curator of the Manuscripts Division at the University of Minnesota Libraries.  He retired in 2008 but continues to research and publish.  His earlier books include Churches of Minnesota: An Illustrated Guide and Minnesota Architects: A Biographical Dictionary.  Veering from architecture, his most recent book chronicles the life and career of Dr. John H. Grindlay, an army surgeon in the China-Burma-India Theater of WWII.  He served alongside the famous “Burma Surgeon,” Dr. Gordon S. Seagrave, and encountered many notable people, including General Joseph W. Stilwell, Field Marshal Louis Mountbatten, and Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek.  Grindlay chronicled his experiences in a detailed diary, which Lathrop used as a colorful and enlightening source of insight into the “forgotten theater” of WWII.  Find A Surgeon With Stilwell in the alumni display on the main floor of the library.
