Julie Schumacher's young adult novels, The Unbearable Book Club for Unsinkable Girls (2012), Black Box (2008),The Book of One Hundred Truths (2006), The Chain Letter (2005), and Grass Angel (2004) , feature memorable characters, a bit of suspense, plot twists, and delve into the murky relationships with friends and family that are a part of growing up. Schumacher has also authored Doodling for Academics, a satirical coloring book.

Her books Dear Committee Members (2014), winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor, and The Shakespeare Requirement (2018) “riff on colleges’ corporatization, the withering of the humanities, and scholars’ eccentricity.”  Dear Committee Members features “bumbling, dentally challenged” English Professor, Jason Fitger, and a year’s worth of recommendation letters as the means to tell a story resulting in a book described as “outrageous and hilarious” and “bitingly funny.” The sequel, The Shakespeare Requirement reverts to a more traditional narrative style, with a “wicked satire of the inner workings of the academy.”
