Who can use ILL?

Interlibrary loan privileges at Mikkelsen Library are available to current students, faculty and staff of Augustana College and the Sioux Falls Seminary.  Recent Augustana & Sioux Falls Seminary graduates are also extended the courtesy of ILL for a short time.  Augustana Library Associates have limited interlibrary loan privileges. Contact the ILL office for details.

What is available to ILL?

Books, articles and media may be ordered.

How do I request an ILL?

Patrons can place ILL orders by using the Interlibrary Loan link in the Library Catalog.  Most research databases have an ILL link that will allow users to place orders. ILL orders can also be placed via email, or by phone 605.274.4921 or by using the ILL form. Printouts of items needed are accepted at the Circulation Desk.  The patron’s name and email or phone should be printed clearly on each request.

Does ILL cost anything?

The majority of ILL material arrives free of charge.  The patron will be contacted if material cannot be borrowed from libraries that lend free.  If the lending library charges to loan an item, that fee is passed onto the user who has requested the material.

How long does it take for an ILL to arrive?

Most ordered material will arrive within 3-5 days.  For items ordered out of state, the time can vary depending on regular mail.  ILL staff strive to get material for patrons as quickly as possible.

How are ILL items delivered?

The patron will be contacted by phone or email when books or media arrive and are ready for pick up at the library Circulation Desk.

Articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers will arrive via email.

Material for faculty and staff of Augustana College and Sioux Falls Seminary will be delivered to their department mailbox or office via the library’s Mikkelsen Express delivery service.

How long can I keep ILLs?

The lending library sets the due date for ILL materials.  Generally the loan period is 3-4 weeks for books and 1 week for videos or other media.  Articles arrive as a copy and are the patron’s to keep.

Can I renew ILL items?

Patrons can ask for renewals on ILL materials before the due date is reached.  ILL staff will contact the lending library about a renewal.  It is the lending library's decision whether items can be renewed or not.  ILL materials can only be renewed once.

What if I return an item late?

It is important to return ILL materials on time, so our library can maintain a good borrowing relationship with the lending library.  The patron will be billed replacement costs, fines, and fees from the lending library for ILL items that are very overdue.

How do I check the status of my ILL request?

If you have questions about the items you have ordered or about Interlibrary loan services, please contact ILL via email augustanaill@gmail.com or phone 605.274.4921, asking to speak to someone in the ILL office.
