One of the most memorable features of Augustana's Harold Spitznagel-designed Mikkelsen Library is its stone and concrete colonade. The library entrance's iconic columns and benches are a striking backdrop for photos, people watching, conversations with friends, declarations of love, and proposals of marriage.
Time and the elements have been hard on the library's exterior: steps deteriorating, retaining walls crumbling, and stonework failing. Augustana has engaged the services of TSP to address these issues with a goal of refurbishing and restoring the library's entrance by the end of the calendar year with the added enhancement of a snow mitigation system for those pesky snowstorms that occur across the many days/evenings when the library is open and the snow removal team is not available.
If you have library stories or photos to share, we would love to include them in a digital collection we're planning as part of this project. In addition, we invite special gifts to the Library Entrance Fund, ensuring restoration of the Mikkelsen entrance proclaiming through the architecture:
All are welcome here!
