Information Literacy/Research Instruction
The Augustana library plays a critical role in supporting and encouraging the learning process and promoting information literacy. Students and faculty are faced with an information environment that continues to increase in quantity and complexity. We believe that in an information rich, democratic society the leaders of the future must be able to use information effectively and ethically. The library’s program of information literacy focuses on librarians collaborating with faculty to ensure that students know how to locate, evaluate, synthesize and utilize information, regardless of format. Instruction ranges from a single visit to an integrated, series of visits to support student learning and research. To schedule a librarian visit, contact Lisa Brunick or your departmental liaison.
Library & Canvas
Librarians can help faculty link to articles, e-books, e-book chapters, or streaming media within their LMS course. We can also help build a block with a link to a subject or course guide and the librarian’s contact information. Your library liaison can also provide learning modules on scholarly/trade/popular journals, the research process, annotated bibliographies, and citation styles.
Media Production
Media Services provides a variety of equipment and software to support faculty and students in creating and editing images, video, presentations, and other multimedia projects. Craig Johnson can assist with the design, implementation, and training for media-based assignments as well as media-enriched instructional projects.
Online/Canvas Course Design
Lisa Brunick is available to provide instructional design support to faculty as they plan, develop and deliver online content. Lisa employs her knowledge of learning theory, pedagogy, instructional technology, and assessment throughout the course design process.
Borrow/Renew
All full and part-time employees of Augustana, Kairos, and the South Dakota ELCA Synod have borrowing privileges at the Mikkelsen Library. Your ID serves as the library card and must be presented when using library services. Library materials are checked out to faculty, administrators, and support staff for 6 months except for items in Ole's Oasis which may be checked out for 4 weeks. All Augustana and Kairos employees may check out media (video cassettes and DVDs, etc.) for 3 weeks. While Mikkelsen Library does not charge faculty and staff fines for overdue materials, they are expected to return items in a timely fashion so that others may use them.
Equipment/Media Requests
Audio-visual equipment is available for use by Augustana faculty & staff. Contact Media Services (605.274.4920 or kelsey.bulock@augie.edu) to schedule delivery and pick-up of A-V equipment to your office or classroom.
E-Reserves & Reserves
The library supports both traditional (print) reserves as well as electronic reserves. Traditional reserves are made available at the main (circulation) desk of the library. The library's electronic reserves are only available to students registered for a particular class. Augustana students access e-reserves via their Canvas account. If you need assistance with e-reserves for your Canvas course, please contact Lisa Brunick (605.274.4921)
Interlibrary Loan
As part of Mikkelsen Library, the Interlibrary Loan Department works to facilitate and support the teaching, learning, and scholarship of Augustana University and Sioux Falls Seminary students, faculty and staff. The Interlibrary Loan staff (Becky Folkerts) strive to provide accurate, timely, and consistent service in a courteous and informed manner in order to provide the best service to our users. Faculty can place ILL orders by using the Interlibrary Loan link found in the library catalog and many of the library's electronic databases/resources. Users can send an e-mail to ill@augie.edu, or call the library at 605.274.4921. Printouts of items needed are also accepted at the Circulation Desk. The patron’s name and email or phone should be printed clearly on each printout. Most articles will be delivered electronically to the faculty's e-mail address. Books and media will be delivered to the designated location in their academic building.
Materials Purchase Request
The library welcomes recommendations from faculty regarding acquisitions of materials. Faculty should contact their departmental liaison.
