Search by Keyword in All Collections: Enter your keyword search in the white field at the top of the website. Press enter on your keyboard or click the magnifying glass to see all results. When you select a result, the keyword will be highlighted in orange in the transcript for the item. Advanced Search is also available.
Browse a collection: Click on the blue Browse button to see all items in a collection
Keyword Search Within an Item: Type your search into the "Search this Record" field. Click the magnifying glass or press "enter" on your keyboard. Pages in which the search word(s) appear will be highlighted in yellow in the document navigation column. Click through the page. The "transcript" field under the image will show you the full transcript for each page with the keywords highlighted.
Navigate through multi-page items: Click on the pages in the navigation bar. You can also click on the grey arrows on either side of the image to flip pages one-by-one.
Download an item: Click on the Download button (arrow pointing downward to a harddrive icon) and choose "This Item" for a PDF of the current page you are viewing or "All" for a PDF of the pages in the item. If the icon does not appear then this particular item is not available for download.
Print an item: Click on the Print button (printer icon) and choose "This Item" to print the current page you are viewing or "All" to print the pages in the item. If the icon does not appear then this particular item is not available for printing.

About the Digital Archive
The Northern Plains Peoples & Places (.np3) is a digital archive created as a collaborative effort by the Mikkelsen Library and the Center for Western Studies (CWS). It was designed to share, index, preserve and store the digital scholarly works and original creative submissions of Augustana University and the research collections of the CWS archives.

Also included are issues of the Lutheran Normal School Mirror from 1899-1918, before Lutheran Normal School and Augustana merged.

- Augustana Landmarks Landmarks of Augustana University include buildings, public art and memorials. This growing collection documents the features of the campus and their use or significance.
- Augustana Oral Histories The purpose of this project is to preserve the history of Augustana University through the voices and stories of those who spent many years at the university and are now Golden Vikings. Mikkelsen Library posts the histories online with permission and preserves the digital files in the library's archives. Library student workers contribute to the project by creating transcripts.
- Augustana Academy Publications The Saga yearbook, The Clarion student newspaper, and various alumni publications of the Augustana Academy formerly located in Canton, South Dakota.
Student and Faculty work
- Augustana Syllabus Repository Guide for access to the Augustana Syllabus Repository. The repository is an opt-in repository for recent documents. The Syllabus Repository is limited to on-campus viewing or by log-in when off-campus.
- Augustana Student Research (on campus-only) Augustana students are engaged in undergraduate research through a variety of programs and opportunities. This collection includes works from the Civitas honors program, departmental honors programs, and scientific research initiatives. NOTE: Images from this collection are limited to on-campus viewing.
- Augustana Faculty Authors Scholarly works and accomplishments of the Augustana faculty are the focus of this online bibliography. The collection was begun with works from the 2013-2014 academic year. Faculty authors are recognized at an annual spring reception hosted by the Mikkelsen Library.
- We are AU project The purpose of the project is to document the experiences of Augustana students during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.

Center for Western Studies Collections
- CWS Archives Sampler A sampling of documents from across the breadth of the Center's archival collections. The selected items span a wide range of history from early missionary work to contemporary political and literary figures from across the Northern Plains.
- Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota Collections The Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota Archives, held at the Center for Western Studies, document the Episcopal Church’s existence in South Dakota, with particular emphasis on the church's mission work. The collection is divided into separate subcollections, each with its own focus. Some collections are centered on individuals and others on individual missions, churches, and schools. This expansive collection also includes scrapbooks and photographic subcollections. The work that yielded this collection was begun by Reverend Frank Thorburn at Dexter House in 1952. Some portions of the archives are restricted; individuals desiring to use restricted materials must obtain the written permission of the Bishop.
- United Church of Christ: South Dakota Conference Collection The archives of the South Dakota Conference of the United Church of Christ are located at the Center for Western Studies. They include correspondence, printed materials, photographs, and some artifacts. The collection is sub-divided into the papers of individual conference leaders and the records of various organizational units and programs, including individual churches, the academies (colleges and Sunday schools), youth programs, missionary societies, and fellowships. As crucial participants in early Dakota missionary work, the papers of several Riggs family members are also included.
- United Church of Christ: South Dakota Conference Collection The archives of the South Dakota Conference of the United Church of Christ are located at the Center for Western Studies. They include correspondence, printed materials, photographs, and some artifacts. The collection is sub-divided into the papers of individual conference leaders and the records of various organizational units and programs, including individual churches, the academies (colleges and Sunday schools), youth programs, missionary societies, and fellowships. As crucial participants in early Dakota missionary work, the papers of several Riggs family members are also included.
- Blue Cloud Abbey (American Indian Culture Research Center) Images Blue Cloud Abbey was a Catholic monastery near the small town of Marvin in northeast South Dakota. It was founded in 1950 to be a base of operations for Benedictine missionaries, a group whose work with the American Indian communities in the Dakotas stretched back to 1876. Father Stanislaus Maudlin was a founding member of Blue Cloud Abbey. First visiting the Northern Plains in 1939 at the age of 22, he devoted the remainder of his life to working within the Indian missions of North and South Dakota. In 1967, Father Stan founded the American Indian Culture Research Center (AICRC) at the abbey. He intended for the center to accomplish two missions: to support emerging Indian leaders as they attempted to rebuild institutions that had been destroyed—family, education, law and order, economy, and church—and to raise up non-Indian respect for Indian spirituality, philosophy of life, and culture. In addition to supporting special projects, the center housed a museum and maintained collections of library materials and historic photographs, focused largely on the Dakota Sioux people, for public research. Due to a lack of new members, the brothers voted to close Blue Cloud Abbey in 2012, and with it the American Indian Culture Research Center. Having worked with Father Stan for several decades to preserve his personal papers here, the Center for Western Studies received the AICRC’s collections of art, artifacts, books, and images. The AICRC image collection is vast – encompassing an estimated 85,000 items across multiple formats. Spanning the years 1870 to 2004, the collection documents the missionary work of the Benedictine monks with local American Indian populations, especially with regards to religion and education. The majority of the images relate to North Dakota and South Dakota, though some also depict the backgrounds and travels of individual monks. This sampling of images provides a mere peek at the collection, highlighting its potential for scholarly, genealogical, and artistic pursuits.
- Historic Sioux Falls Slide Collection A growing collection of historical images of Sioux Falls and the surrounding area from the 1860s to the 1970s.
- CWS Oral Histories A selection of interviews from the Center for Western Studies archives. Currently, this collection consists of oral history interviews with Korean War veterans.
- CWS Artifacts Artifacts in the collections of the Center for Western Studies.
- CWS Newsletters Membership newsletters published by the Center for Western Studies.
- CWS Events Images, audiovisual recordings, and publications from Center for Western Studies sponsored events including the Boe Forum on Public Affairs, the Dakota Conference, and receptions.

- Mikkelsen Library Mikkelsen Library serves as the information center for the Augustana University community through its development of a local collection, its access to other sources of information, its support of the instructional process, and its encouragement of independent learning and research.
- Center for Western Studies Founded by author and former Augustana College (now Augustana University) English Professor Herbert Krause, the center serves as a repository for more than 500 substantive archival collections and maintains a library in excess of 37,000 volumes on the American West.
