You can use library ebooks, periodicals, and streaming videos as course materials. Check with a librarian to make sure an item's license will allow for multiple concurrent uses. Popular databases include:

EBSCO e-books This link opens in a new window A collection of e-books focused on dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, and reference books covering a variety of topics.
JSTOR This link opens in a new window A digital archive includes more than 3,500 leading academic journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as select monographs. The most recently published issues (past 3-5 years) are generally not available.
EBSCO Mega-File This link opens in a new window EBSCO MegaFILE searches Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier and Regional Business News databases. It includes contains more than 85,800 biographies, 118,000 primary source documents, 10,150 company profiles and an image collection of more than 502,000 photos, maps and flags.
ProQuest This link opens in a new window Search a comprehensive file of periodicals for a broad range of subject areas including arts, business, children, education, general interest, health, humanities, international, law, military, multicultural, psychology, sciences, social sciences, and women's interests.
Films on Demand This link opens in a new window Films on Demand provides access to streaming videos in the Humanities & Social Sciences, Business & Economics, Health and Science.

Academic Senate for California Community Colleges OER Initiative The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges Open Educational Resources Initiative (OERI).
American Institute of Mathematics OER The AIM Editorial Board has developed evaluation criteria to identify the books that are suitable for use in traditional university courses. The Editorial Board maintains a list of Approved Textbooks which have been judged to meet these criteria.
BC Campus OpenEd Collection of Open Access textbooks developed in British Columbia.
Big Ten Open Books Big Ten Open Books is a collaboration between the university presses and libraries of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The first collection is on the subject of Gender and Sexuality studies. Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL) The Center for Open Educational Resources & Language Learning (COERLL) was inaugurated in 2010 as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI program (National Foreign Language Resource Centers). The overall mission of these federally-funded centers is to improve the teaching and learning of foreign languages by producing resources (materials and best practices) that can be profitably employed in a variety of settings. Today, COERLL is funded by the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin.
Directory of Open Access Books DOAB is a community-driven discovery service that indexes and provides access to scholarly, peer-reviewed open access books and helps users to find trusted open access book publishers. All DOAB services are free of charge and all data is freely available.

Because it is a real-time, federated search, it can take a bit longer than searches of pre-indexed, curated content; however, as compensation the results returned are absolutely up-to-the-minute for each search target. MERLOT SmartSearch The MERLOT system provides access to curated online learning and support materials and content creation tools, led by an international community of educators, learners and researchers.
Milne Open Textbooks (SUNY) Milne Library Publishing at SUNY Geneseo manages and maintains Milne Open Textbooks, a catalog of open textbooks authored and peer-reviewed by SUNY faculty and staff.
MIT OpenCourseware Some of these online textbooks are open-licensed electronic versions of print books. Others are self-published online books, or course notes which are so thorough that they serve as an alternative to a conventional textbook.
National Science Digital Library The National Science Digital Library provides high quality online educational resources for teaching and learning, with current emphasis on the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines—both formal and informal, institutional and individual, in local, state, national, and international educational settings. The NSDL collection contains structured descriptive information (metadata) about web-based educational resources held on other sites by their providers. Openly Available Sources Integrated Search (OASIS) Openly Available Sources Integrated Search (OASIS) is a search tool that aims to make the discovery of open content easier. OASIS currently searches open content from 115 different sources and contains 455,492 records.
OpenRN The Open RN project is funded by a $2.5 million dollar grant from the Department of Education to create 5 OER Nursing Textbooks with 25 associated virtual reality scenarios.
OpenStax OpenStax publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed, openly licensed college textbooks that are absolutely free online and low cost in print.
Open Textbook Library The Open Textbook Library provides a growing catalog of free, peer-reviewed, and openly-licensed textbooks.
PressBooks Directory Pressbooks Directory is a free, searchable catalog that includes 5,901 open access books published by 162 organizations and networks using Pressbooks. It's easy to copy, revise, remix, and redistribute any openly licensed content found here using Pressbooks' publishing platform.

Khan Academy A nonprofit with the mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.
Open Course Library A collection of high quality, free-to-use courses that you can download and use for teaching. All content is stored in Google docs making it easy to access, browse and download.
Open Education Consortium The Open Education Consortium in collaboration with MERLOT offers a search engine on OER. General search yields results from the integrated database of the Open Education Consortium and MERLOT. Click on “OEC member courses only” to see courses and resources from the Consortium member institutions only.
Open Oregon This page lists course materials that Oregon community college and university instructors are using to reduce textbook costs in their courses.
Open Yale Courses Open Yale Courses provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University. The aim of the project is to expand access to educational materials for all who wish to learn.
Saylor Academy Saylor Academy is a nonprofit initiative working since 2008 to offer free and open online courses to all who want to learn. ChemCollective Resources to Teach and Learn Chemistry The ChemCollective is a collection of virtual labs, scenario-based learning activities, tutorials, and concept tests. Teachers can use our content for pre-labs, for alternatives to textbook homework, and for in-class activities for individuals or teams. Students can review and learn chemistry concepts using our virtual labs, simulations, and tutorials. The ChemCollective is organized by a group of faculty and staff at Carnegie Mellon who are interested in using, assessing, and creating engaging online activities for chemistry education.

Library of Congress Open Access Books This is a growing collection of contemporary open access e-books.
