The borrowing library is responsible for conforming to copyright law and guidelines. Mikkelsen Library abides by the Copyright Act of 1976 and its subsequent interpretations including the U.S. Copyright Office Circular R21, Reproduction of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians and the National Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works (CONTU) guidelines on “Photocopying Interlibrary Arrangements.”

Generally, photocopying should not replace purchase of a subscription or purchase of items in high demand. The commonly accepted standard is no more than five articles published within the last five years from any single journal title. This guideline is applied to requests from the library (not just the individual) on an annual basis. Government documents are excluded from copyright limitations.
