John Carlander earned his B.A. in Art and Philosophy at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. From there he earned his MFA at Bowling Green State University. He spent the next several decades teaching at the collegiate level at Ashland University in Ohio, Concordia College in Minnesota, and Augustana from 1972-1980, and became professor of art at Westmont College in California from 1980-2016. He taught design, drawing, printmaking, and art history. He is now a professor emeritus at Westmont, having retired from teaching and focusing on painting at his studio.
