Paul Goble (1933-2017) grew up in England, graduating from the Central School of Art Design in 1959. He had an early interest in the stories and culture of the Native American tribes. He spent many summers visiting the reservations and deepening his understanding of Native American culture and their beliefs. The Lakota and Yakima tribes adopted him. In 1977 Goble and his wife, Janet, moved to the Black Hills. Goble published over 30 books of traditional stories of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Blackfoot peoples. The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses won the Caldecott Medal for the year's best illustrated book for children.
